History of Containerization

In 1956, an entrepreneurial trucker named Malcolm McLean, seeking a cost-effective alternative to move cargo between New Jersey and Texas avoiding operational delays caused by weather conditions, loaded 58 trailer bodies onto the World War II vintage tanker, the Ideal X, marking the first step of what we call "Containerization". Soon he realized that all he needed was the “box”, not the wheels. From this humble beginning, the container industry has evolved into a sophisticated global transportation multimodal system involving hundreds of millions of units of containerized cargo annually.
